ENVIRONMENTAL INSPECTOR 83431 A

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in a series of classes for inspector positions in an agency’s on-site pollution control inspection program. Positions in this class perform entry level work within a specified geographic location by conducting or assisting in conducting inspections of registered sources to ensure that they are in compliance with all applicable state and federal pollution standards. This class is distinguished from the Environmental Inspector Senior by the performance of less complex inspections and the requirement of on-site guidance provided by an Environmental Inspector Senior when assisting in conducting more complex inspections.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Conducts routine inspections of registered sources to assure compliance with regulatory requirements for emission control. Duties typically include inspecting stationary sources of air pollution by conducting independent, lower level inspections, or by conducting/assisting with the conducting of more complex inspections when on-site guidance is provided by an Environmental Inspector Senior; identifying, evaluating and recommending resolutions to causes of non-compliance; issuing notices of violations; preparing inspection reports; and performing analysis of plans and specifications to assure operation within permit limits.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Positions in this class receive general supervision from an Environmental Inspector Supervisor or other higher level manager.

Scope: Work performed affects compliance to pollution control standards and the health of citizens of a specified geographic area.

Impact of Actions: The impact of an error in judgment may result in the need for corrective actions, and in pollution to the environment of the specified geographic area. Positive consequences insure compliance with standards which results in a healthy environment.
