Distinguishing Features of the Work

Serves as assistant head of the Marine Resource Commission’s fisheries management division.

Exercises immediate supervision over technical and other support personnel in subordinate departments. Reports to the Marine Resources Assistant Commissioner Fisheries Management.

Supervises day to day activities of the division. Is responsible for professional and technical direction, establishing work priorities, and coordinating projects among departments. Is in charge of the division during the assistant commissioner’s absence.

Directs personnel in the analysis of fishing industry conditions, and in appraising the condition of fisheries stocks. Oversees evaluation of existing regulatory measures. Develops plans for updating conservation and management of species including impact on user groups and on employment and economics in the seafood industry. Directs scientific data gathering, analysis and reporting on harvests, landings and trends; the development of automated fishery harvesting and reporting systems; and the collecting, analysis, and sharing of industry data with other states and jurisdictions.

Supplements the assistant commissioner in the chairing of citizen participation projects, and in the presenting of recommendations to regulatory bodies and citizen groups. Works with scientific and technical staffs of other states and with educational and research institutions involved in fishery resource problems.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of marine species and environments. Knowledge of the economics and applied practices of the seafood industry and its regulatory framework. Ability to exercise public leadership in developing industry plans and regulations. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to direct the work of technical personnel.

Graduation from a college or university with major course work in marine science, fisheries, or a related field, and related management-level experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
