Distinguishing Features of the Work

Directs field operations of the Marine Resources law enforcement division.

Supervises Marine Resources Inspection Supervisors and subordinate personnel. Reports to the Marine Resources Assistant Commissioner for law Enforcement.

Is responsible for directing patrol activity ashore and afloat for enforcing the laws and regulations governing conservation, licensing, harvesting, and health measures in commercial fishery. Responsibilities also include small boat safety, search and rescue, and assistance on the waters. Plans and implements deployment of patrol vessels, vehicles, aircraft, and the associated enforcement personnel. Directs area supervisors on types of patrols, enforcement, and inspection activities to be performed.

Monitors seafood harvesting activity levels, and advises supervisors on conservation, harvesting, and enforcement conditions. Suggests policy approaches to deal with major problems. Interprets laws and regulations in response to citizen inquiries, and in determining appropriate action to be taken by field personnel.

Substantial discretion is allowed in directing field forces as to type and intensity of effort needed to deal with a wide range of problems on a day to day basis. Assumes direction of the marine law enforcement program in the absence of the assistant commissioner for law enforcement.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of vessel operations. Knowledge of commercial seafood harvesting and related regulations. Knowledge of law enforcement procedures such as vessel boarding, evidence, testimony, communications, search and rescue. Ability to explain laws and regulations to the public. Ability to supervise the work of others. Ability to prepare reports.

Graduation from high school, and experience related to the duties of the position. Supervisory experience preferred. Training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for high school graduation.
