Distinguishing Features of the Work

Directs support services for an extensive marine patrol vessel fleet.

Supervises agency personnel assigned to vessel maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities are carried out independently under the general direction of the Assistant Commissioner, Law Enforcement.

Scope of operations extends throughout eastern Virginia on a seven-day week, twenty-four hour day basis. Incumbent is responsible for the operational readiness of over sixty vessels, an elaborate police radio communications network, electronic navigation equipment, marine repair facilities, and operating base station facilities.

Evaluates equipment needs, recommends new types of vessels and equipment, develops repair and replacement cycles, develops specialized equipment and projects equipment repair and replacement costs.

Regularly inspects the operational readiness and conditions of all vessels. Selects recipients of best maintained vessel awards. Recommends corrective action for crews on improperly maintained vessels.

Negotiates with, selects, and supervises contractors for major vessel repairs, and the installation and maintenance of electronic radio and navigational equipment.

Instructs enforcement officers and other agency personnel in the proper use and maintenance of all vessels, engines, auxiliary gear, navigational and communications equipment.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of vessel construction, maintenance, and auxiliary gear. Ability to organize a maintenance program, and to train subordinates and vessel crews in the installation, maintenance and use of a wide range of marine equipment. Ability to negotiate business arrangements for repairs and installation work.

Graduation from high school and experience in marine operations and repair. A combination of specialized training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for high school graduation.
