Distinguishing Features of the Work

Serves as a uniformed officer-in-charge of a patrol boat in the 50 foot or larger class engaged in the enforcement of commercial and recreational fishing, and other marine regulations; or serves as the first assistant to a regional Marine Resources Patrol Inspection Supervisor.

Supervises Marine Resources Patrol Officer A’s and B’s. Typically reports to a Marine Resources Patrol Inspection Supervisor.

Command of a vessel in the 50-foot or larger class entails supervision of a larger subordinate staff; and in addition involves operation and navigation over wider expanses of water for longer sustained deployments than smaller patrol craft.

Assignments as assistant regional supervisor entail line authority over subordinate officers and responsibility for the region in the supervisor’s absence. Assistance is provided to the supervisor in matters such as staff training and scheduling, and citizen complaint handling.

Positions in both categories have authority to board vessels or enter establishments, inspect cargoes, issue summons, make arrests, and confiscate illegal gear.

 

Qualification Guide

Considerable knowledge of statutes and regulations governing marine life conservation and harvesting. Knowledge of commission and court proceedings. Ability to give testimony. Ability to operate large vessels over open water as required. Ability to train and supervise the work of others. Ability to work varying schedules, and reside in area of assignment.

Graduation from high school, and demonstrated competence in the enforcement of marine resources laws and regulations; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a valid state driver’s license.
