Distinguishing Features of the Work

Serves as a uniformed officer on a vessel engaged in patrol for the enforcement of commercial and recreational fishing and other marine laws and regulations.

Reports to a higher level Marine Resources Patrol Officer on board the vessel, or at the location of assignment.

The responsibilities include monitoring and enforcing seafood harvesting laws and regulations which encompass time and season limitations, size and cull requirements, and type of gear and manner of use. Officers also enforce laws dealing with licensing, closing polluted areas, and transporting and purging condemned shellfish. Additional duties include rescue and assistance, and small boat safety and equipment law enforcement.

Authority is exercised to board vessels, inspect cargoes, issue summons, make arrests, and confiscate illegal gear. Assignments may also include independent patrol and inspection duty on waterways and dockside areas in radio-equipped cars with trailable boats. Assignments and work schedules vary according to harvesting, weather, season and market fluctuations. Portions of time are devoted to training, hearings and court testimony, public information events, and care and upkeep of equipment.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of statutes and regulations governing marine life conservation and harvesting. Ability to operate vessels and small boats in coastal waters. Ability to reside in region of assignment, and to work varying schedules in inclement weather. Ability to exercise enforcement authority.

Graduation from high school and experience related to the position’s duties or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a state driver’s license. Newly appointed officers must successfully complete an initial training regime as a condition of continued employment beyond the initial six-month probationary period.
