Distinguishing Features of the Work

Plans, coordinates, and supervises the enforcement of game, inland fish and boating safety laws in the State, as first assistant to the Game Law Enforcement Chief.

The duties are supervisory in nature, and involve frequent field trips to districts to inspect equipment, investigate serious complaints from the public, and to aid and instruct subordinate supervisors and wardens in enforcement procedures, as first assistant to the Game Law Enforcement Chief. Responsibility is assumed for evaluating and resolving independently problems encountered in the field, and for anticipating potential problem areas. The work includes participating in the development and maintenance of division programs such as in-service training, evaluation of district progress, and procedural changes which improve the effectiveness of enforcement activities. General supervision is received from the Game Law Enforcement Chief who establishes the operating policies of the division and approves of major procedural changes.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

  1. Visits field districts to inspect equipment such as boats, motors, trailers, and radios for proper use, care, or replacement; recommends and develops equipment specifications; recommends the purchase of specific equipment which best meets specification requirements.
  2. Confers with subordinate supervisors concerning disciplinary problems; discusses appropriate disciplinary actions and possible consequences; reports major disciplinary problems to the Game Law Enforcement Chief.
  3. Conducts training and administrative meetings in districts; discusses and outlines methods of resolving such problems as special investigation of 1aw violations, establishing and maintaining good public relations, and explains new policies and procedures of the Commission.
  4. Reviews monthly activity reports from the districts and discusses questionable items with district personnel, verifies and approves equipment repair estimates, reviews expense vouchers of field personnel and vouchers submitted directly by vendors, for any unusual charges or purchases.
  5. Investigates complaints made by the public against personnel or the manner in which game 1aws are enforced; discusses findings with superiors and makes appropriate recommendations for action.
  6. Participates in establishing and maintaining sound programs in recruitment, recruit training, and in-service training; participates in the preparation of division budget and progress reports.
  7. May evaluate qualifications of applicants for game warden positions through personal interview and reference checks and recommends employment.

 

Qualification Standards

Graduation from an accredited high school and six years of experience in the enforcement of game and inland-fish laws, two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. Additional education above the high school level may be substituted for experience on an equivalent time basis, provided no substitution is made for one year of the required supervisory experience.

Considerable knowledge of State game, fish, and boating safety 1aws, and policies governing their administration; demonstrated ability to evaluate and supervise effectively programs and personnel involved in the enforcement of game and fish laws; ability to establish and maintain good relations with the public.
