CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the supervisory level class in the Game Warden series. Positions in this class supervise and coordinate personnel, programs, and equipment required to enforce fish, wildlife, boat, and related laws in order to ensure the safe and controlled use of wildlife resources. This class is distinguished from the Game Warden Senior class by its supervisory responsibility for a law enforcement district or for a statewide investigative or law enforcement training program. It is distinguished from the Game Warden Manager by the latter class's responsibility to manage all of the department's law enforcement resources within a multi-district region.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty which involves supervising Game Wardens Senior and Game Wardens in order to control the interrelated and interdependent activities of adjacent law enforcement patrol areas. Evaluates work demands and problems; determines priorities; and formulates general work plans which are implemented through area work leaders. Resolves unusually difficult or unique enforcement, investigative, or legal problems by researching and interpreting statutes and regulations; by formulating remedial action plans; and by directing the use of personnel, program, and/or equipment resources. Prepares work schedules and district assignments during peak periods or unusual missions when resources must be shared or coordinated between patrol areas. Plans joint law enforcement actions of a routine nature with other law enforcement agencies; defines the role and responsibility of department personnel; and personally supervises special operations. Reviews performance plans and evaluations of district Game Wardens for accuracy and for conformance with regional and divisional standards; determines the need for training to address performance weaknesses; prepares and presents, or supervises the preparation and presentation of in-service training; and disciplines employees through corrective action measures when necessary. Compiles information from area leaders on work activity in order to prepare and submit regular performance reports. Authorizes expenditures for budgeted resources and non-routine maintenance needs. Prepares annual budget request necessary to maintain, repair, or replace materials, supplies, and equipment; and submits the budget for approval to the Game Warden Managers.

Supervision Given: Positions in this class supervise Game Wardens and Game Wardens Senior by establishing goals and objectives, reviewing work accomplishments, and providing discipline in order to ensure quality/quantity goals are met.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from a Game Warden Manager regarding work projects and objectives to be accomplished, time frames involved, and desired results. Positions may develop methods and procedures to accomplish tasks, or may follow existing criteria or practices. Supervision is available for guidance and assistance, when needed.

Scope: Performs work which affects public safety, landowner property, the success of other law enforcement agencies, the concerns of sportspersons, and wildlife-related economic interests by promoting the safe and controlled use of wildlife resources within several patrol areas.

Impact of Actions: Performs work which may have a serious, long-range impact on the agency. Poor decision making can be costly in terms of time money, public goodwill, and the success of other divisions within the agency.

Personal Contacts: Positions in this class have frequent internal and external contacts on matters of interest to landowners, sportspersons, state and local police, federal fish and wildlife agencies, judges, attorneys, and the general public regarding issues of fish, wildlife, and boat law enforcement.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of law enforcement principles/practices allowing independent completion of projects and of new or unusual enforcement-related assignments. Considerable knowledge of supervisory practices enabling the accomplishment of work through subordinates.

Skills: Considerable skill in the safe and effective use of firearms, automobiles, power boats, and communication equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to develop and implement law enforcement work plans; to supervise others; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and to work cooperatively with others who are outside the division or department in the accomplishment of long-range goals.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Law enforcement certification from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and a valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in law enforcement work related to fish, wildlife and boat activities.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class was established August 16, 1990. It replaces the Game Warden Assistant Supervisor class.
