Distinguishing Features of the Work

Provides specialized veterinary diagnostic services as the chief veterinary poultry diagnostician for the state.

Provides technical direction to laboratory and other support staff. Reports to an Assistant State Veterinarian in the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service’s central laboratory.

Performs postmortem examinations on poultry utilizing a broad range of diagnostic skills including gross and microscopic pathology, microbiology, serology, virology, toxicology, and other laboratory procedures. Makes on-the-farm evaluations to correlate laboratory findings with field conditions. Serves as poultry diagnostic and consultative resource for all Agriculture and Consumer Services laboratories.

Maintains working relationship with industry managers and/or owners of integrated poultry operations to determine if laboratory services are meeting industry needs. Maintains contacts with professional and educational groups. Participates in continuing education programs for producers, veterinarians, and interest groups. Attends scientific meetings, and follows state-of-the-art developments in scientific journals.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of livestock and poultry diagnostic procedures. Knowledge of related laboratory testing. Knowledge of livestock and poultry nutrition and management. Ability to perform specialized diagnostic work.

Completion of a doctor of veterinary degree program at an American Medical Association approved college of veterinary medicine. A master of science degree in a specialized field of pathology is preferred.
