CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Seed Analyst series. This class performs simple and routine tests and analyses on seeds in accordance with official rules (set guidelines) and prescribed laboratory procedures. Positions in this class learn to analyze seed samples for purity, plant seeds for germination tests, perform seed germination tests and miscellaneous laboratory tests to determine the quality of commercial and privately owned seed lots for marketing and planting in Virginia. The Seed Analyst Assistant is distinguished from the Seed Analyst class by having limited responsibility and by being closely supervised by the Seed Analyst Supervisor.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs detailed work of routine difficulty involving identifying and testing grain or other seeds; performing routine laboratory tasks such as mixing, counting, sorting, and weighing seeds; controling germinators during tests; and recording seed data on permanent office records.

Supervision Given: Positions typically have no supervisory responsibilities.

Supervision Received: Receives close supervision from a Seed Analyst Supervisor or a higher level professional/supervisor. Technical direction is received from a Seed Analyst. Supervisory control is gradually lessened as knowledge of the work is gained and skill is demonstrated.

Scope: Work affects laboratory processes and the accuracy and reliability of data used by those involved with agricultural production and distribution.

Impact of Actions: Performs work that may have moderate impact on the accuracy and reliability of laboratory findings and may affect the production, distribution or sale of agricultural or other products/services performed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of biology, agronomy, horticulture, or a life science.

Skills: Skill in operating a microscope.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to distinguish small visual differences between seed varieties; to follow written and oral instructions; to work effectively in a laboratory environment; and to work effectively with others.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school with additional course work in biology, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: None required.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class was established as part of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program and replaces the Seed Analyst A class, effective February, 1990.
