Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises and trains employees engaged in the sampling and grading of grain and hay in an area of the State or at an export terminal.

The duties may involve either responsibility for supervising the work of several grain graders at a number of grading stations in an area of the State or, as assistant to an Export Grain Grading Supervisor, responsibility for supervising the work of several grain graders at an export terminal grading station. When serving as a field supervisor, the duties may include responsibility and authority for inspecting and designating as serviceable or unserviceable grain-moisture measuring devices in use by either State grading stations or private concerns, and for insuring that the master measuring device is periodically calibrated according to standard measuring devices maintained by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. As assistant to an Export Grain Grading Supervisor, the duties may include making inspections of cargo vessels from any country to determine their suitability to load and carry grain.

Supervision may be exercised over this class by either the State Grain Supervisor, the Assistant State Grain Supervisor or an Export Grain Grading Supervisor, who makes assignments and issues general instructions. Performance is evaluated on the basis of periodical observations and the review of reports of activities.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

  1. Visits grading stations in the area of responsibility; reviews the work of subordinate personnel and gives instructions on methods of improving grading of grain and hay.
  2. Supervises grading activities at an export terminal on an assigned shift of work; assigns duties and observes sampling and grading activities to insure uniformity of service; advises on proper interpretation of Federal grading standards and other factors which may affect the quality of grain or hay.
  3. Inspects or assists in the inspection of cargo vessels to determine their suitability to load and carry grain.
  4. Takes samples of and grades grain lots for buyers and sellers when the represented quality is questioned.
  5. Conducts on-the-job training of employees; reviews employees’ work to insure that representative samples are obtained and properly graded.
  6. Performs any of the duties of Grain Grader B.

 

Qualification Standards

Completion of a standard college course in agriculture and three years’ experience in grain and hay grading. Experience in grain and hay grading may be substituted for the required college education on an equivalent time basis.

Must possess a Federal grader’s license showing authority to grade all variety of grains traded within area of operation.

Complete knowledge of grading standards; ability to interpret and apply standards in controversial cases; ability to make public contacts and to supervise and train other employees.
