CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class for positions which are responsible for the overall management and operation of agricultural/farming programs. This class may be responsible for managing single or multiple farming operations and programs at the designated institution to which it is assigned. These positions may exist at a university managing and facilitating farming operations programs for agricultural research, academic or extension programs or also be responsible for the agricultural business and/or farming operations for a state correctional facility. Responsibilities involve planning, developing, directing and supervising farming operations and/or livestock programs. This class is distinguished from the Agricultural Supervisor class by the greater size and complexity of the former's total agricultural program(s) management responsibilities at the single institution to which it is assigned.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty planning, developing, managing, coordinating and supervising farming operations involving livestock programs and/or the planting and harvesting of field crops and vegetables. Depending upon whether this class is assigned to: (1) an educational institution facilitating agricultural research, academic or extension programs including animal science, agronomy, horticulture and dairy sciences or; (2) a correctional facility managing agricultural business and farming programs and activities, the applicable duties typically involve supervising, coordinating and overseeing the upkeep, servicing and maintenance of all farm equipment and machinery, buildings, grounds, fences, roadways and any research areas. Interviews, hires, trains, directs, supervises and evaluates staff and farm workers; trains employees in the safe, proper use of all farm equipment and machinery, as well as in proper farming procedures; orders, purchases and maintains inventory of all types of pertinent records, such as lime and fertilizer application records, crop yield records, teaching and research data, up-to-date animal health records, and employee time records; prepares and manages farm operating budget for equipment, machinery, supplies and building maintenance. Oversees, supervises and participates in the planting and harvesting of field and vegetable crop; production management and maintenance of poultry, swine, beef and dairy cattle, and other livestock; land preparation, fertilization, pest control irrigation and cultivation. Assists faculty, program directors, administrators, research scientists and/or farm superintendents in planning and developing new facilities and the remodeling of old ones; assists research scientists in calculating resources necessary to implement proposed projects and with planning the execution of research and teaching proposals; facilitates the timely and accurate collection of data concerning research crops, plants and animals.

Supervision Given: Provides supervision for a small to large group of lower level farm managers and farm workers including technicians, students, service and trades personnel and inmates.

Supervision Received: May receive directions from an educational institution’s department head, agricultural research or academic programs director, correctional facility director or other higher level administrator.

Scope: Positions in this class manage, direct and coordinate farming operations which may effect the overall agricultural research, academic, extension or agricultural business programs they are responsible for implementing and facilitating.

Impact of Actions: Positions in this class have a direct effect upon the successful yield of crop and livestock production and any agricultural research, extension and business programs they are responsible for implementing and facilitating.

Personal Contacts: Frequent range of internal and external contacts are maintained towards the positive coordination, implementation and execution of programs and activities to obtain maximum production and achieve project goals and objectives.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS. AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of farming and/or agricultural research operations and procedures, all types of farming equipment and machinery, animal husbandry, livestock production and management, and field or greenhouse crop production, livestock and farm equipment.

Skills: Working skills in operating, utilizing and repairing all types of farm and agricultural research equipment, machinery and tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to manage and direct agricultural and farming operations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certificates: Pesticide and/or herbicide licensure may be required.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school with technical training as acquired through college with major course work in agriculture or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Management level experience involving large farm, agricultural and/or research operations involving livestock and/or field and greenhouse crops.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class is a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program and replaces the class of Agricultural Manager B. It was established in September 1989.
