Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs and supervises a variety of farming activities incidental to farm operations, and/or agricultural programs in support of research, extension or teaching missions.

May provide direct supervision of Agricultural Technicians A. General supervision is received from an Agricultural Manager, Scientist or faculty member.

Incumbents perform or supervise the application of chemicals or fertilizers, record special data and harvest crops of plants; perform emasculation and cross-pollination operations; inoculate plants with diseases and record reactions. The work includes treating animals for diseases by administering hypodermics and vaccinations; formulating and regulating the rations and feeds of animals and changing proportions of carbohydrates and proteins; administering such drugs as antibiotics and sulfas; performing artificial insemination; collecting and preparing fecal and urine samples and blood samples; inspecting pens for signs of disease; establishing sanitation control measures; measuring of animals and the recording of data.

The work is of moderate difficulty, requiring that incumbents detect questionable research findings which may have resulted from faulty materials or procedures. Incumbents are also required to make additional tests and examinations to verify or invalidate questionable initial findings. The work may include the supervision of employees in the proper methods and procedures of scientific research.

 

Qualification Guide

Working knowledge of the appropriate field of agriculture. Knowledge of agricultural, research and experimentation procedures. Ability to supervise and direct the work of others if required. Ability to follow written and oral instructions and to operate various types of farm equipment. Certification as pesticide applicator if applicable.

Graduation from high school. A combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for high school graduation. This spec replaces class specs for Agricultural Research Technician B and Farm Foreman.
