Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs a variety of routine farming tasks incidental to farm operations, and/or agricultural programs in support of research, extension or teaching missions.

Supervision of others is not a requirement of positions in this class. Immediate supervision is provided by a higher level technician, an Agricultural Manager, Scientist, or faculty member.

The work is of routine difficulty but requires an understanding of the nature and purpose of various programs in order that deviations from expected results are recognized. May prepare notes and data on predetermined status of experimentation.

Incumbents apply chemicals or fertilizers; harvest grain or plants; operate farm equipment; measure and mark plot areas; and record data. The work includes measuring and recording body measurements of animals; checking identification of animals and applying banding and tattoos; checking and recording the health, vigor, temperature, food and water consumption of animals; feeding animals; assisting with calving, lambing, and furrowing of female animals; preparing cows for milking, maintaining milk production records and keeping equipment sterilized; sorting and grouping hatching eggs; marking eggs; and operating hatchery, brooding, ventilating and transport equipment.

 

Qualification Guide

Some knowledge of the appropriate field or agriculture. Some knowledge of basic agricultural, research and experimentation procedures. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to operate farm equipment. Certification as pesticide applicator if applicable.

Graduation from high school. A combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for high school graduation. This spec replaces the class specs for Agricultural Research Technician A and Farmer.
