CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first level in the Bridge Tunnel Patroller series for positions which direct, control traffic, and maintain security at bridge tunnel facilities to include connecting roads and approaches. This class is distinguished from the Bridge Tunnel Patroller Supervisor by the latter's supervisory responsibilities. Police certification and weapons handling are not requirements of this class.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty. Inspects vehicles displaying hazardous placards by examining manifests and/or cargo for compliance with tunnel regulations. Visually inspects vehicles at designated stations for potential hazards and radios the next station to stop the vehicle for a detailed inspection. Stops and directs traffic when lanes are closed in tunnels or on bridges in response to vehicle breakdowns, oversized loads, passage of hazardous materials, unsafe vehicles, fire, or pedestrians in roadways. Assists other agency personnel, rescue and fire units, local or state police with emergency situations such as removing injured persons, removing wrecked or disabled vehicles, clearing debris, controlling or preventing fire, and directing traffic; and gives assistance to the general public by providing directions and information. Checks buildings and grounds for security or malfunctioning equipment, and reports problems to supervisor; and questions or reports persons acting in a suspicious manner.

Supervision Given: None.

Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from a Bridge Tunnel Patroller Supervisor.

Scope: Positions rotate through designated insection stations at an assigned bridge tunnel complex.

Impact of Actions: Decisions affect the well-being and safety of the traveling public.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external and internal contact with the general public to provide information, directions, and assistance; and with state and local police, fire, and rescue unit personnel to facilitate restoring traffic to its normal speed and flow.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of the problems associated with traffic; and of safety and security principles and practices.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing; follow oral and written instructions; deal courteously and tactfully with the public; and physically able to stand watch and patrol bridge tunnel facilities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: Valid Virginia Motor Vehicle Operator's license at hire.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience working in heavy traffic.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
