CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This class is the journey level in the Electronic Surveillance Equipment Series. Positions in this class perform duties relating to the operation of electronic surveillance equipment in order to maintain building environmental conditions and security in a state agency. This class is distinguished from the Electronic Surveillance Equipment Lead Operator class by the closer supervision received in the performance of duties.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty in the area of electronic surveillance. The duties are repetitive in nature and are performed according to established operating policies and procedures. Duties typically involve the operation of, and monitoring by, computerized electronic surveillance equipment and the performance of control check functions by visual display and printout. Positions in this class make inquiries into mechanized mechanical systems relating to building conditions, such as heating, air conditioning, humidity, ventilation, smoke, fire detection and security violations, and take appropriate action to correct undesirable deviations in such building conditions. Records facility conditions that are under surveillance equipment control on a daily basis. Incumbents are responsible for controlling temperatures and humidity in buildings; starting and stopping power equipment; closing fire doors; and communicating problems and concerns related to building conditions with security officers, police officers and building maintenance and repair personnel. May perform receptionist duties and control access and egress to service and employee entrances and storage areas. Records entrance and exit times of individuals. Operates a radio base station for communication with security and police forces. Operates a paging system for internal building communications.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Performs work under the general so revision of the Electronic Surveillance Equipment Lead Operator or another superior.

Scope: The work can affect the security and safety of buildings, their contents and the security and safety of the general public and employees in the building.

Impact of Actions: Decisions could have a moderate impact in terms of significant costs in time, money, services and public and employee goodwill if buildings, properties, general public and employees are not properly monitored. Decisions must be made in an effective and expeditious manner.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contact with museum department heads and other staff for giving and receiving emergency and routine instruction. Occasional external contacts with equipment specialists on matters of equipment and maintenance.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of power plant equipment allowing the resolution of simple problems related to such. Working knowledge in the operation of electronic surveillance equipment to allow for the solution of typical problems in normal work situations. Working knowledge of the layout of buildings, and the location of surveillance and detection equipment throughout buildings.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain electronic equipment controls; react appropriately to emergencies; lead work shifts without direct supervision; and function during emergency situations in a calm manner.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience in related duties.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class was revised in March 1988 and this class specification replaces the Electronic Surveillance Equipment Operator class specification dated April 1, 1984. This is a result of the Statewide Classification Review/Specification Update Program.
