Distinguishing Features of the Work

Inspects institutional buildings, grounds and equipment for conformity to fire prevention and safety standards.

Duties include regular inspections and necessary equipment tests of such things as fire alarm and water distribution systems, sprinklers, extinguishers, hoses and buckets, mechanical rooms, kitchen and laundry areas, storage areas, etc. Prepares reports and follows through on the correction of irregularities. Accompanies state or local fire inspectors on their inspections. Assists in the development of fire prevention programs. May participate in staff training. May serve as liaison, within the agency and with local and state authorities. Maintains necessary records and reports.

May report to a higher level safety professional or other agency administrator.

 

Qualification Guide

Graduation from high school, and appropriate training and/or experience in fire prevention and safety.

Knowledge of fire fighting principles and equipment. Ability to make inspections and equipment tests in conformity with regulations and procedures. Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.
