CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Emergency Services Radiological Maintenance series. Positions in this class supervise the Emergency Service Radiological Maintenance program on a statewide basis. Duties include supervising technicians, scheduling service, making field trips, performing in-shop repairs, requisitioning supplies, and maintaining service records. This class is distinguished from the lower level Emergency Services Radiological Equipment Maintenance Technician, which functions at the journey level, performing the majority of repair tasks and responding to service calls.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty in planning, supervising, and implementing the statewide maintenance program of equipment inspection, calibration, repair, and exchange. Assigns production level expectations and work schedules, maintains an equipment inventory, and evaluates staff work. Duties include compiling information required for the renewal of a maintenance contract with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, acting as State Radiation Protection Officer for radioactive materials identified by the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and developing long-range plans for the maintenance program.

Supervision Given: Provides general supervision to Emergency Services Radiological Equipment Maintenance Technicians.

Supervision Received: Receives directions from the Emergency Services Hazardous Materials Manager.

Scope: Work affects the operation of all designated radiological equipment statewide, the effectiveness of the program, and a segment of the agency's budget.

Impact of Actions: Satisfactory performance promotes the health and safety of equipment users. Ineffective program supervision could result in loss of staff time and money.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent contact with state, local, and federal agencies to establish their participation in the maintenance program.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of electronics, agency and federal regulations governing equipment maintenance, purchasing procedures, and supervisory principles.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to test and repair radiological equipment, interpret and implement guidelines and regulations, supervise others, and prepare written reports.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school with additional training or education in electronics or a closely related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in the repair and maintenance of electronic instruments.
