CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Emergency Services Radiological Maintenance series. Positions in this class maintain operationally ready radiation detection instruments and radioactive training source sets in support of all radiological contingencies. Duties include inspecting, servicing, and repairing a variety of radiation detection survey instruments. This class is distinguished from the higher level Emergency Services Radiological Maintenance Supervisor by the latter's responsibility to plan for and manage the program and provide formal supervision to technicians.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty. Inspects, services, repairs, calibrates, and modifies a variety of radiation detection survey instruments using various electronic test equipment. The work involves interpreting schematics, wiring diagrams, repair manuals, and modification orders. Schedules and makes field trips to equipment users, maintains repair/service records, and participates in agency training programs. Handles radioactive material in accordance with federal, state, and agency regulations and performs and analyzes the results of leak tests on radioactive materials.

Supervision Given: None.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the Emergency Services Radiological Maintenance Supervisor.

Scope: Work affects the operation of designated radiological equipment in assigned locations throughout the state.

Impact of Actions: The work safeguards the safety and health of equipment users and ensures the accuracy of equipment readings.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent internal and external contact with local government and state and federal agencies to establish dates for service calls and equipment delivery.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of electronic principles, circuits, schematics, diagrams, and the use of electronic test equipment.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to test and repair radiological equipment; trace and interpret electronic circuitry, schematics, and diagrams; maintain written service records; and work with radioactive materials following prescribed safety regulations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school with additional training in electronics or a closely related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in the maintenance and repair of electronic equipment.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
