Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises Mine Inspectors and other personnel engaged in the inspection of coal and other types of mining operations.

Supervision is received from the Mine Division Technical Assistant and/or the Mine Division Chief.

Directs and assists Mine Inspectors in performing inspections encompassing physical facilities, equipment, work flow, ventilation, gas control, roof conditions and other health or safety aspects of mine operations. Inspection of mine records is also involved as well as the preparation and maintenance of required reports. Assists in the investigation of complaints and accidents, and in determining whether mines should be closed where dangerous conditions exist.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of mining operations including: ventilation; mine gases and dust, and methods of detection, control, and explosion prevention; mine roof and ground control; electrical and mechanical loading; explosives; and recovery and rescue methods. Knowledge of mining laws and regulations. Ability to work under adverse conditions. Ability to prepare records and reports.

Possession of a first class mine foreman’s certificate of competency issued by the board of mine examiners, and successful completion of the board’s mine inspector examination. Applicable portions of state law will be adhered to in determining the supervisor’s minimum age and area of assignment.
