Distinguishing Features of the Work

Provides professional, detailed technical assistance in one or more areas of underground coal mine operations.

Reports to a Mine Inspector Supervisor, and may receive guidance from the Mine Division Deputy Director, or Mine Division Chief.

Provides on-site technical advice and assistance to mine owner/operators, mine inspectors and supervisors in the specialty areas of electrical distribution, ventilation and roof control. Reviews plans submitted by owner/operators for methods and equipment to be used in these areas, with emphasis on ensuring safe mining operations in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Recommends approval or revisions in such plans to the Mine Division Chief.

Conducts special or spot inspections of mine operations as requested. Investigates accidents to determine contributing factors, and recommends preventive measures. Keeps abreast of new technology, methods and equipment. Provides liaison with related federal agency personnel.

 

Qualification Guide

Specialized technical knowledge of one or more areas of underground mining operations including electrical distribution, ventilation and roof control. Knowledge of mining laws and regulations. Ability to analyze mining conditions in a specialized technical area, and prescribe measures to improve or insure safe working conditions. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to work under adverse, hazardous conditions.

Possession of a first class mine foreman’s or chief electrician’s certificate of competency issued by the state board of mine examiners, and successful completion of the board’s mine inspector examination. A college or university degree in mine, electrical or mechanical engineering is preferred. Experience in a responsible underground mining position demonstrating possession of the above noted knowledge and abilities.
