Distinguishing Features of the Work

Inspects coal or other types of mining operations in compliance with applicable statutes and regulations.

Receives supervision from Mine Inspector Supervisors, Mine Division Technical Assistant, or Mine Division Chief.

Conducts inspections of surface or underground facilities, and prepares inspection certificates. Inspections encompass work flow and activity, physical facilities and equipment, ventilation, electrical and hydraulic components, belt conveyors and haulage ways, escape ways, preparation facilities, gas and dust control, roof conditions, abandoned and idle areas, explosives storage, and various safety or health hazards.

Inspects mine records, and give assistance in interpreting statutes and regulations. Investigates complaints and accidents. Exercises authority to suspend operations where dangerous conditions exist.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of mining operations including: ventilation; mine gases and dust, and methods of detection, control, and explosion prevention; mine roof and ground control; electrical and mechanical loading; explosives; and recovery and rescue methods. Knowledge of mining laws and regulations. Ability to work under adverse conditions. Ability to prepare records and reports.

Coal mining inspectors must possess a first class mine foreman’s competency certificate issued by the board of mine examiners. Inspectors of mining other than coal must possess a surface foreman’s competency certificate or underground mine foreman metal or nonmetallic certificate. Both must successfully complete the board’s mine inspector examination. Applicable portions of state law will be adhered to in determining the inspector’s minimum age, experience requirement, and area of assignment.
