CORRECTIONS ASSISTANT WARDEN 72181 A

 

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Corrections Warden Series for positions which serve as deputy wardens for a specific area of responsibility in a major adult correctional institution. Positions manage and direct one or more functions consisting of administrative support, treatment, security, or associated programs providing safe and secure confinement for inmates. This class is distinguished from the Corrections Warden class by the emphasis on direct supervision of subordinate staff within a specialized area of facility management.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of the Work: Positions in this class perform work of routine difficulty in connection with daily operations to carry out the mission of the institution by implementing and monitoring policies for treatment or operations functions within a correctional facility. Performs and reviews human resources functions for subordinate staff; formulates goals, plans, and strategies for areas of responsibility; evaluates progress toward goals; and initiates changes to effect improvement. Reviews existing programs and activities; recommends new or revised programs to meet identified needs; develops budget proposals for assigned functions; and authorizes appropriate expenditures; approves recommendations for disciplinary actions against inmates; resolves problems and issues among subordinate supervisors; and conducts facility and security inspections to include security devices, firearms, and related equipment: and initiates action to correct deficiencies to assure quality treatment, safe and secure confinement, and resolve any issues, complaints or concerns from offenders, families or representatives.

Supervision Given: Provides supervision to subordinate staff who are responsible for treatment, security, administrative, and/or support activities related to facility operations.

Supervision Received: Receives direction from a Corrections Warden or Corrections Warden Senior.

Scope: Supervisory responsibilities affect the day-to-day operations of the assigned functions. Management decisions concerning treatment programs and security affect the welfare of offenders as well as the safety of staff and the community.

Impact of Actions: Actions have significant impact upon the successful delivery of programs and operations. Inappropriate decisions may result in monetary losses to the agency, breaches in security, ineffective services to inmates, or in employee/public goodwill.

Personal Contacts: Positions have frequent internal and external contact with state government, law enforcement and judicial officials; offenders and their families; local government representatives; local community groups; and vendors regarding offender status, treatment, security issues and administrative functions to exchange pertinent information, coordinate work activities, assure proper treatment and safe and secure confinement of offenders and establish and maintain effective working relationships in the community.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of the criminal justice system. Considerable knowledge in one of the following areas: treatment programs for offenders, facility security, or administration/operations support functions, with working knowledge in the other two areas.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to implement and monitor policies and procedures; to respond appropriately to emergency situations, and to manage a subordinate staff.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certifications: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field.

Level Add Type of Training: Some supervisory experience in areas of treatment, administration/support and/or security functions.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

As a result of a Classification Review/Specification Update study this class replaces the Corrections Facility Director A class, effective September 1991.
