CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the single class in the Corrections Security Specialist series. Positions in this class serve as the staff security specialist for the Department of Corrections.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty which includes monitoring security practices at correctional institutions and field units to ensure compliance with policies and procedures; conducting audits of institutions and field units to evaluate the physical and technical security aspects of facilities, staffing and training on security practices to identify deficiencies and needs; reviewing audit reports from the Office of the Inspector General and conducting follow-up evaluations to ensure security objectives are met; arranging or providing consultative services to regional offices, institutions and the administration on any correctional security matter; and participating in long range security planning, budgeting and staffing.

Supervision Given: Provides direction to an Agency Management Analyst Senior.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from a Corrections Operations Chief.

Scope: Positions affect a wide range of statewide correctional activities and operations to promote security control.

Impact of Actions: Ineffective security control decisions and actions could have a serious impact on the agency, employees, inmates and the general public by resulting in serious long-term costs in time, money, or services and a loss of goodwill. Effective security evaluations and recommendations for corrective actions will result in the provision of adequate security control practices, ensuring the security of correctional institutions and field units.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contact with equipment providers to evaluate their effectiveness for possible future acquisition; with professional security consultants to receive information needed to evaluate security practices; with other state corrections agencies to receive information on security operations; and with local, state and national law enforcement agencies to receive or provide information on security operations and training programs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the practices, techniques and equipment of correctional institutional security programs.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to evaluate and plan for security needs in any type of correctional facility and to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with course work in criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in correctional security or law enforcement.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
