Distinguishing Features of the Work

Provides executive and management support to the Director of the Department of Corrections on policy and management issues.

Work is performed under the direction of the Corrections Department Director.

Serves as the Director’s representative on various councils, committees and task forces with state officials who may advise on or set corrections policy. Monitors internal and external developments related to policy issues, budgets, and new approaches to the administration of the correctional system. Makes recommendations on policy changes or other appropriate actions. Identifies agency/interagency problems, and designs and coordinates specific studies, reports, and projects to achieve problem solutions.

Assumes a major responsibility for quality control of agency work products, especially in the areas of major studies and their outcomes, and management reports and correspondence. Quality control measures include establishment of timeliness and consistency standards. Responds to correspondence and phone calls on behalf of the Director. Serves as primary liaison with the Rehabilitative School Authority on all issues relating to Authority schools in corrections institutions.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of state criminal justice systems, policies, and operating methods. Knowledge of administrative and fiscal management procedures. Demonstrated ability to plan, develop and evaluate complex programs in criminal justice. Demonstrated ability in oral and written communications.

Graduation from a college or university preferably with major coursework in criminal justice administration or a related field, and extensive experience related to the position’s duties, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
