Distinguishing Features of the Work

Assists the Corrections Regional Administrators in the development, administration and coordination of programs and services in the region.

An employee in this class serves as management staff to the Regional Administrator. Will directly supervise a specific program or service routed through the region. The class is utilized by the two divisions: the Division of Youth and Community Services, which has four Corrections Regional Program Managers per region for State; and, Local Court Services Units, Adult Probation and Parole Services, State and Local Youth Facilities and State and Local Adult Facilities and the Division of Adult Institutional Services which has three Corrections Regional Program managers per region for Support Services, Planning and Programs, and Operations and Training.

May coordinate with operations staff at each organizational unit in the region to ensure that Departmental, divisional and regional policies and procedures are being followed. May participate in the development of standards by which a facility will be evaluated. Recommends changes and improvements in programs and services. Provides consultative services and may directly supervise organizational unit heads. Participates in and assumes responsibility for intermediate and long-range planning, programming, budgeting direction and administration of specific programs within the region. Other duties may include resolving personnel matters and approving equipment and supply requests for organizational units within the region.

 

Qualification Guide

Preferred qualifications are graduation from a college or university with major study in areas related to the duties of the position. Extensive progressively more responsible experience in the specific program discipline is preferred. A combination of related education and experience may be substituted for college graduation.

Ability to successfully plan, organize and monitor a variety of programs within the region. Ability to communicate effectively with others. Ability to work effectively with superiors and subordinates as well as community-based agencies and groups. Must have a thorough knowledge of effective management principles, and budgeting procedures. A thorough knowledge of sections of the Code of Virginia relating to Corrections may be necessary for certain positions.
