Distinguishing Features of the Work

Develops, administers and coordinates programs supporting local correctional facilities including jails, jail farms and lockups.

Work is performed under the general direction of a Corrections Assistant Director who manages adult corrections community programs. Provides functional supervision to Corrections Regional Program Managers (local adult facilities), and technical assistance to local correctional officials to ensure compliance of facilities" operations with Board of Corrections’ standards and departmental policies. Confers with operations staff at regional offices to ensure that these policies and procedures are being followed.

Participates in the development of standards by which a facility will be evaluated. Recommends changes and improvements in programs and services. Provides consultative services to sheriffs and jailers, and may directly supervise other local facilities when directed by the Board of Corrections. Participates in intermediate and long-range planning, programming, budgeting direction and administration of specific programs such as medical services, recreational programs, and vocational programs.

Oversees the auditing and verification of the monthly reports from approximately 100 local facilities. Certifies invoices submitted to the Compensation Board. Supervises a Food Operations Director A who monitors local facilities’ food operations. Confers with capital outlay and maintenance staff on facility construction and renovation. Notifies the Corrections Academy for Staff Development when special training for local facility staff is needed.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of local jail operations and related sections of the Code of Virginia. Knowledge of problems associated with dysfunctional behavior and its control. Knowledge of accepted supervisory and treatment methods employed in community correctional facilities. Knowledge of the administration of work release programs and their applications in the community.

Graduation from a college or university with major course work in public administration, psychology or social work, criminal justice or a related field, and experience in corrections or similar work that included administrative/supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
