CORRECTIONS INVESTIGATOR SUPERVISOR 72105 A

 

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class and supervisory level in the Corrections Investigator Series. Positions in this class have authority and responsibility to assign, plan, monitor and review all investigations by subordinates to ensure proper procedures are followed; have general police power as authorize by the Code of Virginia; and carry weapons. This class is distinguished from the Corrections Lead Investigator class by its supervisory and administrative responsibility.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Positions in this class perform work of considerable difficulty in supervising investigations of criminal and/or administrative activities affecting the Department of Corrections; reviewing cases for format, clarity, and completeness; coordinating work with local, state, and/or federal agencies involved in complex or jurisdictional investigations; reviewing inmate escape folders andiron extradition orders; maintaining a constant search for escaped inmates or parolees; complying with extradition orders; contacting and coordinating work with law enforcement officials regarding complex investigations and/or escaped prisoners; maintaining log books; preparing cases and written reports; approving requests for polygraph examinations and handwriting analyses; testifying in court and administrative hearings; maintains investigation files; preparing budget and equipment requests; and approving travel vouchers, and other purchases or expenditures

Supervision Given: Provides supervision and technical assistance to Corrections Investigators and Corrections Lead Investigators; conducts performance evaluations; and takes necessary disciplinary action.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from a Corrections Inspector General or other administrative position. Independently performs duties and responsibilities in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Scope: Activities affect the efforts of law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of escaped prisoners.

Impact of Actions: Work facilitates the investigation of criminal and administrative activities and provides information and testimony which will aid in the conviction of criminal offenders or the apprehension of escaped prisoners. Inaccurate evaluations and testimony could result in the lack of a criminal conviction or inability to apprehend an escaped prisoner.

Personals Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts are made with inmates; staff; attorneys; Commonwealth Attorneys; local, state, federal and out-of-state law enforcement agencies; and district and circuit courts concerning investigations.

 

KNOWLLDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of investigative methods/techniques, practices, and procedures used to prepare, examine, analyze, and preserve items of evidence for criminal cases or administrative hearings; and federal and state criminal statutes and administrative policies. Working knowledge of court procedures and rules.

Skills: Working skill in the use of police and investigative equipment relevant to this job.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to analyze and review investigations for completeness and accuracy; develop comprehensive court and other required documentation; work effectively with law enforcement officials, lawyers, judges, investigators, and the general public; and supervise subordinate staff.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Certification by the Virginia Criminal Justice Services, and possession of a Virginia driver’s license. Must pass an extensive background investigation.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in law enforcement or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in law enforcement, security and/or investigations.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for education and experience.
