Distinguishing Features of the Work

Duties combine difficult casework in correctional rehabilitation counseling with responsibility for planning and supervising the delivery of correctional rehabilitation treatment services at a State correctional institution.

Positions in this class normally supervise the rehabilitative counseling activities of a group of three or more Correctional Institution Rehabilitation Counselors and Trainees and in addition carry case loads in counseling and planning correctional treatment services for the more difficult adult and Juvenile offenders. Positions of time are devoted to training new employees in facets of correctional rehabilitation counseling and to advising working counselors on case management methods. Continued working contacts are maintained with departmental supervisory personnel at the institution in planning coordinated programs, for the rehabilitation of offenders utilizing vocational academic, medical, recreational, and psychological resources as we11 as work assignments. Recommendations are made to institution superintendents for improvements in the offering and delivery of correctional rehabilitation services.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

  1. Supervises a working group of three or more Correctional Institution Rehabilitation Counselors and Trainees who counsel adult and juvenile offenders on behavioral problems and plan for and coordinate their rehabilitation as constructive citizens.
  2. Counsels difficult offenders and formulates individualized programs of rehabilitative treatment services and activities for them.
  3. Plans for and supervises the training of new counselor personnel.
  4. Reviews the case management practices of individual counselors; advises and demonstrates methods and techniques for the improvement of counseling performance and for the maximum utilization of rehabilitation resources which are available at the institution.
  5. Maintains working contacts with departmenta1 supervisors at the institution in planning and organizing rehabilitation programs; in appraising the effectiveness of existing rehabilitation resources in such areas as academic courses, vocationa1 training, work assignments, recreation, and classification practices; and in developing recommendations for new rehabilitation services.

 

Qualification Standards

Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of social service, counseling, rehabilitation, psychology, or related studies and one year of experience in correctional rehabilitation counseling, correctional institution teaching, or administrative or supervisory experience in a related social service program.

OR

Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major studies in the fields noted above and three years of experience in correctional rehabilitation counseling, correctional institution teaching, or administrative or supervisory experience in a related social service program.

Counseling ability; ability to coordinate the work of others; knowledge of the State correctional system, classification practices, rehabilitation resources, and associated administrative procedures.
