CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the single class in the Armorer series. Positions in this class maintain, test, repair, and track firearms and other weapons for law enforcement agencies and agencies whose employees carry weapons.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Positions in this class perform work of moderate difficulty by testing new weapons and ammunition, including calibration and ballistics testing; checking new weapons to ensure required specifications are met; providing direction and training to employees concerning routine weapon cleaning and maintenance; making repairs and maintaining the agency's weapons using specialized tools and equipment; documenting problems with specific weapons; preparing weapons for return to the manufacturer; maintaining automated records for individual weapons, including dates received and issued and any repair or maintenance information; implementing inspection programs to check weapons periodically; writing weapon and equipment specifications; and contacting manufacturers for information.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives direction from a State Police Sergeant or other agency official.

Scope: Work affects the reliability and quality of weapons used in statewide law enforcement which may have agency-wide application.

Impact of Actions: Incomplete or mistakes in repair, maintenance, and inspection of the agency's weapons could result in significant negative impact on the agency in terms of money, time, and public goodwill, and on the weapons users' and citizens' safety.

Personal Contacts: Positions have frequent internal and external contact with agency employees to provide service and to answer questions, and with weapon manufacturers to exchange information.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of various types of firearms; methods of testing, repair, and maintenance; and safety procedures concerning firearms. Working knowledge of recordkeeping and the use of a personal computer.

Skills: Working skill in the repair and use of firearms.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; diagnose and repair firearms; use automated office equipment; understand and apply rules, policies and procedures; and maintain detailed information.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional training in the repair and maintenance of firearms.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience repairing and maintaining a wide variety of firearms.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
