CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

 

This is the third class in the Warehouse Supervisor series. Positions in this class direct the operation of an agency's central warehouse which is large in size but does not have statewide distribution; or supervise a major section of a large warehouse which serves and delivers to multiple agencies or facilities statewide. Supervision is exercised over Warehouse Supervisors and Warehouse Supervisor Seniors who in turn supervise Warehouse Workers and Warehouse Specialists. This class is distinguished from the Warehouse Supervisor Senior class by its responsibility for a larger warehouse or for a section of a large warehouse engaged in multi-agency or multi-facility distribution with numerous statewide distribution points. It is distinguished from the Warehouse Superintendent Senior class by the latter's responsibility for multiple central facilities or for several sections of a large warehouse with distribution to multiple agencies or facilities.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty in coordinating and supervising the activities of a comprehensive warehouse operation. Organizes the daily receiving, storing, delivery and disposal operations. Interviews and hires staff; trains personnel in warehouse procedures; and assigns and evaluates work of subordinates. Reviews receiving and issuing reports and requisitions. May coordinate a continuous program to ensure that obsolete and surplus property and supplies are promptly identified and reported for disposal. Makes claims for damaged merchandise or shortages; investigates and assists in resolving and filing reports on customer complaints; communicates with vendors to resolve delivery problems, back orders, and returns. Positions are also responsible for the security of commodities, surplus property and warehouse buildings; and for supervising the maintenance and servicing of equipment.

Supervision Given: Supervises Warehouse Supervisors and Warehouse Supervisors Senior who in turn supervise Warehouse Workers and Warehouse Specialists. May supervise other subordinate staff.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from a Warehouse Superintendent Senior or other higher level manager. Receives guidance when unusual problems arise or on special assignments.

Scope: Activities affect the various units of the agency/agencies dependent upon the warehouse function.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance ensures the timely and adequate provision of warehouse stock to the affected agency units. Errors may result impact in added cost, time, and inconvenience to the units or agencies served by the warehouse.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external contacts with vendors to obtain information on delivery problems, back orders and returns, and with drivers and shipping companies to coordinate shipping and receiving. Frequent internal contact with agency personnel to provide warehouse services.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of large-scale warehouse operations, policies and procedures; of fleet operations; of merchandise claim procedures; of sources of supply; of grades of goods; of modern inventory control and warehouse equipment; and of supervisory principles and practices.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to organize and control a shipping and receiving operation; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to supervise others; and to schedule and coordinate diverse activities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certificates: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible supervisory experience in warehouse operations.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class was established as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program and replaces the Warehouse Supervisor class, effective November 1990.
