CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

 

This is the first class in the Warehouse Supervisor series. Positions in this class are generally responsible for direct supervision of work crews consisting of Warehouse Workers and Warehouse Specialists who are involved in the receiving, storing and shipping of a wide variety of materials, supplies, and equipment. Some positions in this class may be the top supervisory level in smaller warehouse operations. This class is distinguished from the Warehouse Specialist class by its responsibility for supervising the work of several Warehouse Workers and Warehouse Specialists. It is distinguished from the Warehouse Supervisor Senior class by the latter's responsibility for supervising a larger, more complex warehouse operation involving supervision of an agency's central warehouse which is medium-sized, or a major section of a large warehouse with limited statewide distribution.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty by supervising daily warehouse operations. Trains warehouse staff and supervises the receipt of merchandise including inspection for quantity and condition against packing lists and purchase orders; ensures that merchandise is stored in proper area with respect to temperature and frequency of use; oversees the picking of orders; |and is responsible for loading shipments, securing seal on shipments, giving instructions to drivers, and evaluating and disciplining subordinate staff. May participate in interviewing, and hiring staff; development of policies and procedures; completion of records such as daily receiving reports; and maintenance of inventory system. On a limited basis may perform duties typically performed by Warehouse Workers and Warehouse Specialists.

Supervision Given: Provides supervision to Warehouse Workers and Warehouse Specialists. May also provide supervision to office services and equipment operation classes, to inmates assigned to the warehouse area or to other subordinate staff.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Warehouse Supervisor Senior, or other higher level supervisor or manager.

Scope: Work affects the provision of services by the assigned warehouse operation which in turn affects the agency departments relying on warehouse materials.

Impact of Actions: Errors may result in the inefficient use of resources and inconvenience to overall warehouse operations. Effective supervision of staff ensures timely execution of warehouse operations.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contact with individuals delivering or receiving materials.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of warehouse procedures, practices and scheduling; supervisory principles; inventory control; recordkeeping procedures; and of safe operation of equipment.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of materials handling equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to organize and perform a variety of recordkeeping tasks; to formulate and implement detailed work plans; perform basic mathematical calculations; to interpret and convey safety related documents; and to supervise staff, recognize deficiencies, and make personnel adjustments.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certificates: Some positions may require a valid Virginia driver's license.

Education and Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in warehousing which involved planning and scheduling.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program. It replaces the Warehouse Foreman class, effective November 1990.
