CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Warehouse series. Positions in this class perform specialized functions which include providing instruction and guidance by acting as a lead worker; operating a forklift on a regular and exclusive basis; performing warehouse duties predominantly in a freezer area where special handling is critical; or selecting and filling orders of controlled substances which require extensive documentation and are highly susceptible to damage. This class is distinguished from the Warehouse Worker class by responsibility for more difficult specialty functions. This class is distinguished from the Warehouse Supervisor class by the latter's responsibility for supervising several Warehouse Workers and Specialists and having overall responsibility for verifying shipments received, ensuring that material is properly stored, and that orders are filled accurately and in a timely manner.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty in a unique environment or of a specialized nature in a warehouse facility in addition to the typical warehouse duties of receiving, stocking, picking and delivering a wide variety of materials, supplies and equipment. Duties include leading and guiding the work of subordinates; working in a freezer area; operating a forklift on a regular and exclusive basis; or selecting and filling orders which require additional documentation and special handling.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions may provide leadership and guidance to Warehouse Workers.

Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from a Warehouse Supervisor or other supervisory personnel.

Scope: Work affects the operations of an assigned warehouse area.

Impact of Actions: Efficient receiving, stocking, and delivering of stock items ensures the most effective use of time and resource. Errors could result in additional costs and delay of materials to other units of the agency.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent internal and external contacts with individuals delivering or receiving materials.

 

 

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of warehouse procedures and stock coding systems; and of inventory and stock selection recordkeeping procedures. Some knowledge of supervisory principles to lead workers and assign tasks.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of materials handling equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to follow written and oral instructions; to read, write, and make basic mathematical calculations for inventory and other reports; to reconcile inventory, stock selection, and error reports; to communicate effectively with other employees; and to lift and manipulate heavy materials.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certificates: Some positions may require a valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: High school courses or training sufficient to perform basic reading, writing, and math.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience involving receiving, stocking or delivering materials.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program. It replaces the Warehouse Freezer Worker, Forklift Operator classes, and some positions in the Storekeeper Foreman class, effective November 1990.
