CLASS CONCEPT FUNCTION

 

This is the first supervisory class in the Storekeeper series. Positions in this class are responsible for supervising a large stores function at an agency. This class is distinguished from the Storekeeper Senior class by its responsibility for a larger, more complex stores function, and by its responsibility for the full range of supervisory functions including evaluating performace, hiring, firing, and disciplining staff.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of the Work: Performs supervisory work of moderate difficulty which involves supervising the inventory, receiving, issuing activities, storing and delivery of goods at an agency. Positions in this class are responsible for manpower planning, time utilization and safety program management; and are responsible for the full range of supervisory functions which include developing work standards, initiating policies, and procedures, conducting employee performance evaluations, and interviewing, hiring, training, disciplining and firing employees. Positions in this class may also have responsibility for mailroom, print and duplicating services management.

Supervision Given: Provides general supervision to Storekeeper Helpers, Storekeepers and Storekeeper Seniors.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a business manager, purchase and stores supervisor, materials manager, or other administrative position.

Scope: Supervisory activities affect all phases of requisitioning, receiving, storing, distributing and issuing supplies, equipment and merchandise of a general or specialty stores operation which affects agency processes and services which rely on stored items. Work may also affect mailroom, duplicating and print shop management.

Impact of Actions: Performs work which has a moderate impact on the functioning of an agency or institution. Proper performance of duties ensures the timely receipt and delivery of goods as well as the efficient operation of the procurement system. Failure to adequately perform duties can lead to untimely delivery and receipt of goods, thus adversely affecting the efficiency of the entire agency operation.

 

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with vendors, agency personnel, and maintenance personnel to obtain or distribute stored goods.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of storekeeping and inventory control procedures and techniques; and of stores inventory recordkeeping procedures. Working knowledge of basic mathematics; and of the principles and practices of personnel management.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise the work of others; to communicate effectively orally; to maintain inventory records; and to prioritize work.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses and Certification: Valid Virginia operator's license.

Education and Training: Graduation from high school or an equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in stores or warehouse operations.

This class was established as a result of the Classification Review/ Specification Update Program. It replaces the Storekeeper Supervisor C class, effective November 1990.
