CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class in the Storekeeper series. Positions in this class are assigned to an agency's central storeroom or to a specialty area such as housekeeping, buildings and grounds, food services, medical supplies, bookstore operations, or police or athletic equipment, and are responsible for maintaining detailed inventory records and logs, and verifying the amount and condition of stock items received and issued. This class is distinguished from the Storekeeper class by its responsibility for a larger variety and quantity of items received, stored and distributed and the responsibility for initiating the replenishment of stock items. This class is distinguished from the Storekeeper Supervisor class by the latter's responsibility for performing the full range of supervisory functions.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty. Maintains a large variety and quantity of stockroom items such as janitorial supplies, tools, equipment, frozen or general foods, surgical or medical supplies, clothing, and/or text books or educational supplies. Positions in this class are responsible for initiating replenishment of stock; receiving, storing and issuing supplies; inspecting received items for quantity and quality; verifying invoices against purchase orders and receiving or shipping tickets; maintaining perpetual inventory and associated records; preparing or receiving requisitions; delivering and distributing stock items; taking periodic physical inventories; and maintaining a variety of records such as inventory, purchase orders, shipping or receiving tickets, bin cards or similar documents. Positions in this class may make emergency purchases or may be responsible for operating equipment such as pallet movers in order to store stock.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions in this class may provide technical guidance to lower level storekeepers or helpers, students or inmates.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Storekeeper Supervisor or other higher level manager.

Scope: Activities extend to all phases of requisitioning, receiving, storing and distributing and issuing supplies, equipment and merchandise in support of a general or specialty storekeeping operation.

Impact of Actions: Failure to requisition, receive and issue store items in a timely manner may result in additional costs and the delay of delivery of services by others. Accepting inadequate or faulty merchandise may also incur additional costs to the agency. Effective storekeeping activities result in provision of adequate supplies/store items which facilitate the provision of services by other units.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with vendors, all levels of agency staff, faculty and students for the purpose of obtaining and distributing stock or stock information.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of general storeroom and inventory control procedures and techniques; and of stores inventory recordkeeping procedures. Working knowledge of basic mathematics.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of a calculator and manual and motorized materials handling equipment may be required by some positions in this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with others; to maintain a variety of inventory records; to load and unload heavy supplies; to perform basic mathematical calculations; and to prioritize work.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certificates: Some positions in this class may be required to possess a valid Virginia driver's license.

Education and Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in a stores or warehouse operation.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established as a result of the Classification Review/ Specification Update Program. It replaces the Storekeeper Supervisor A, Storekeeper Supervisor B, and Storekeeper Foreman classes, effective November 1990.
