CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Storekeeper series. This is the first class which performs the full range of storeroom functions including receiving, issuing, ordering, and storing supplies and equipment in an agency storeroom that may involve food and perishables, medical/hospital, housekeeping, trades, laundry, clothing, or office supplies. This class is distinguished from the Storekeeper Helper class by its responsibility for a wider variety of storeroom operations tasks. This class is distinguished from the Storekeeper Senior class by the latter's broader area of responsibility for duties such as initiating stock re-orders and having a greater variety and quantity of stock items.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty. The work typically involves receiving, issuing, delivering, ordering, and storing supplies and equipment for an agency storeroom. Ordering supplies may involve working with other areas within the agency such as a central agency warehouse operation or ordering parts from local vendors upon approval and authorization. Inspects incoming supplies and equipment and verifies shipments with purchase orders, requisitions, delivery receipts, or packing slips. Reviews supply and equipment requests to ensure accuracy, proper authorization, and that appropriate inventory is available. Conducts inventory and checks supplies and equipment for quantity and quality, by counting and posting to a manual or automated system; and refers discrepancies to the supervisor. Maintains records and reports of items received, issued, and on hand; of fuel and oil use; and of equipment, work orders, purchase orders, time sheets, and invoices. Restocks shelves; rotates stock; and checks stock levels. May search laundry and clothing for contraband; or may function as lead workers for correctional inmates or seasonal employees.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions may serve as lead workers for correctional inmates or for seasonal employees.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Storekeeper Supervisor or other higher level manager.

Scope: Activities affect the quality and timeliness of services provided to the agency.

Impact of Actions: Work has a moderate impact on agency operations by ensuring that appropriate supplies and equipment are provided in a timely manner to agency employees and clients.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with suppliers to determine if supplies and equipment received are complete or to order supplies; and with agency departments to fill requests for supplies and equipment and to ensure that issued supplies and equipment are accurate.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of general storeroom procedures.

Skills: Working skill in the operation of a calculator.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read, write, weigh, measure, and perform routine mathematical calculations and ability to lift or move heavy objects.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Some positions may be required to have a valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience delivering, receiving and/or inventorying materials.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established as a result of the Classification Review/ Specification Update Program and replaces the Storekeeper Assistant class, effective November 1990.
