CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Storekeeper series. Positions in this class function as helpers in a state agency or institutional storeroom that may include food, medical/hospital, housekeeping, trades, laundry, clothing, or office supplies; assist in receiving, storing and issuing materials, equipment and supplies; perform manual labor; or deliver materials, equipment and supplies to designated locations. This class is distinguished from the Storekeeper class by the latter's responsibility for a wider variety of storeroom operations. The storekeeper series is distinguished from the Warehouse series by the latters' concentration on shipping and receiving bulk items rather than distributing commodities to end users; reliance on motorized equipment such as forklifts and pallet trucks; and its handling of the full range of commodities used by an agency or institution.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty which is repetitive in nature. Duties include picking up and/or delivering packages, materials, and supplies to designated locations by use of a handtruck, a flatbed cart, or by hand; moving furniture and heavy equipment in accordance with work orders; driving a truck or other vehicle as required to transport furniture, linen carts or other equipment; transporting requisitioned supplies and materials between locations; delivering controlled materials such as chemicals or liquid nitrogen tanks to designated locations; and performing housekeeping duties to keep the storeroom or work areas clean and orderly. May perform a variety of linen duties such as counting, weighing, marking and stocking linen; sorting, sizing and shelving linens; and/or washing linen and mending small holes in linen as needed.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Immediate supervision is provided by a Storekeeper Supervisor or other higher level manager.

Scope: Work facilitates the receiving, storing, and issuing of materials but is of a routine nature and has little impact beyond the immediate unit.

Impact of Actions: Accuracy of work and timely distribution of requested materials, equipment and supplies enhances the efficient operation of requisitioning divisions or units.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contact with agency or institution staff in the distribution of materials, equipment and supplies. Occasional public contact in the performance of receiving duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of the principles of delivering and receiving materials.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Ability to follow oral and written instructions; to read and write; to perform basic mathematical functions; and to perform all physical requirements of the job.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Some positions may be required to possess a valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: Education sufficient to perform basic mathematical calculations.

Level and Type of Experience: None required for entrance into this class.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
