CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the ABC Warehouse Mechanic series. Positions in this class have responsibility for operating the maintenance shop and are engaged in general mechanical maintenance and repair activities on a wide variety of electric motorized warehouse equipment that uses electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems. This class is distinguished from the ABC Warehouse Mechanic by its responsibility for ensuring the maintenance and repair of warehouse equipment; coordinating and scheduling daily work assignments; and ordering and purchasing general equipment, supplies and spare parts.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty in managing the maintenance shop, and in mechanically repairing and maintaining electric motorized warehouse equipment. Coordinates and schedules work assignments of Warehouse Mechanic/ABC positions, provides technical guidance and inspects work to ensure it is performed according to requirements, writes specifications for new equipment purchases, makes general equipment purchases in accordance with policy and procedure, and orders and maintains an inventory of spare parts. Inspects forklift and pallet trucks and other equipment and vehicles periodically to determine maintenance needs; uses appropriate hand tools and test equipment to repair electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems; inspects and re-seals batteries and repairs battery chargers; welds broken or separated equipment parts; and paints equipment to extend its useful life. Operates equipment to ensure that it is in working order. Ensures that vehicles are maintained at state facilities in accordance with procedures; inspects two-way radio equipment to determine if maintenance or repair is needed, and arranges for equipment maintenance or repair. Maintains service and down time records on all warehouse equipment, and keeps work records for vehicles maintained and repaired in state facilities. Trains Warehouse Mechanics/ABC in all areas of assigned duties, and trains warehouse personnel in the safe and responsible operation of mechanical equipment.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; positions do function in a lead capacity for a small group of Warehouse Mechanics/ABC by coordinating and scheduling daily work assignments, providing technical guidance and inspecting work to ensure it is performed according to requirements.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a higher level warehouse management position.

Scope: General maintenance and repairs are performed on all types of electric motorized warehouse equipment, which affect their working condition and the efficient use of warehouse resources.

Impact of Actions: Work has serious impact on the safety of equipment operators, on the proper functioning of equipment, and on cost effective equipment utilization. Ineffective maintenance or repair of warehouse equipment or improper guidance of Warehouse Mechanics/ABC may result in considerable costs in additional mechanical work, down time of other warehouse personnel, and loss of goodwill from the general public because of late merchandise delivery to retail stores. Effective job performance ensures the efficient working condition of warehouse equipment.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external contacts with parts and equipment suppliers to obtain information and to place orders for equipment, parts and supplies; and internal contacts with departmental and state procurement divisions to obtain information and to complete appropriate forms.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of effective diagnostic and repair techniques and procedures related to a wide variety of electric motorized warehouse equipment; of hydraulic mechanics; and of general shop practices. Working knowledge of procurement policy and procedures.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of hand and power tools, and test equipment. Working skill in the operation of warehouse equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend technical repair manuals; to perform basic arithmetic calculations; to read gauges and testing devices; to lift heavy objects and perform manual labor; to operate various types of warehouse equipment; and to provide technical guidance and assistance to Warehouse Mechanics/ ABC.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school graduate or equivalent and vocational training or course work in electric motor repair, hydraulics, general mechanics or a related field.
