CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the ABC Warehouse Mechanic series. Positions in this class are engaged in general mechanical maintenance and repair activities on a wide variety of electric motorized warehouse equipment that uses electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems. This class is distinguished from the Warehouse Mechanic Lead/ABC by the latter's responsibility for ensuring the maintenance and repair of warehouse equipment, coordinating and scheduling daily work assignments; and ordering and purchasing general equipment, supplies and spare parts.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty in the mechanical repair and maintenance of electric motorized warehouse equipment; periodically inspects forklifts, pallet trucks, other equipment and vehicles to determine maintenance needs; uses appropriate hand tools and test equipment to repair electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems; inspects and re-seals batteries and repairs battery chargers; welds broken or separated equipment parts; and paints equipment to extend its useful life. Operates equipment to ensure it is in working order. May assume duties of Warehouse Mechanic Lead/ABC in his or her absence.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from a higher level warehouse management position.

Scope: General maintenance and repairs are performed on all types of electric motorized warehouse equipment, which affect their working condition and the efficient use of warehouse resources.

Impact of Actions: Work has moderate impact on the safety of equipment operators, on the proper functioning of equipment, and on cost effective equipment utilization. Ineffective maintenance or repair of warehouse equipment may result in considerable costs in additional mechanical work, down time of other warehouse personnel, and loss of goodwill from the general public because of late delivery of merchandise to retail stores. Effective job performance ensures efficient working condition of warehouse equipment.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent external contacts with parts and equipment suppliers to receive information on the procurement of equipment, parts and supplies, when the Warehouse Mechanic Lead/ABC is absent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of effective diagnostic and repair techniques and procedures related to a wide variety of electric motorized warehouse equipment; of hydraulic mechanics; and of general shop practices.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of hand and power tools, and test equipment. Working skill in the operation of warehouse equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend technical manuals; to perform basic arithmetic calculations; to read gauges and testing devices; to lift heavy objects and perform manual labor; and to operate various types of warehouse equipment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school graduate or equivalent and vocational training or course work in electric motor repair, hydraulics, general mechanics or a related curriculum.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in general repair and maintenance of electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems found in warehouse equipment.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
