CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class and first supervisory level in the Equipment Maintenance and Repair series. Positions in this class are responsible for supervising positions in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and motorized equipment. This class is distinguished from the Equipment Repair Technician Senior by its responsibility for performing the full range of supervisory tasks. It is distinguished from the Equipment Repair Shop Manager by the latter's assignment of full authority for planning and scheduling activities for a large shop, responsibility for a greater variety of trades, and more complex administrative tasks.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs supervisory work of moderate difficulty. Duties typical for positions in this class include prioritizing work and scheduling assignments to Equipment Repair Technicians; diagnosing repairs to be performed; completing required paper work related to equipment repair and budgeting; receiving and issuing tools, parts and equipment stock; ensuring the maintenance of inventory records; scheduling and performing preventive maintenance inspections; training personnel in the use of specialized equipment and procedures; and enforcing the use of required safety equipment and safe procedures. May test Highway Equipment Operators to certify for permits to operate highway equipment. May perform some advanced repair work as working supervisor.

Supervision Given: Positions provide supervision to Equipment Repair Technicians and Equipment Repair Technicians Senior. Positions may provide supervision for additional shop personnel or to office services support positions.

Supervision Received: Receives direction from an Equipment Repair Shop Manager, Transportation Residency Maintenance Manager, or other higher level manager.

Scope: Work affects the safe and timely repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment in a given geographic area or agency.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance contributes to the safety of others by preventing costly delays and down-time due to ineffective planning.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of supervisory principles and practices and of computer applications. Considerable knowledge of vehicle or equipment shop practices, and repair and maintenance techniques.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of hand and power tools and advanced diagnostic and testing equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise others; to prioritize and schedule work; to diagnose equipment problems and make repairs; to read and interpret repair manuals; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to keep and maintain a variety of records; and to train others in equipment maintenance and repair.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license. May require certification for vehicle safety inspections issued by the Department of State Police and a commercial driver's license.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with advanced training in automotive and equipment repair.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in automotive and equipment repair.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class was developed as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program, and replaces the Highway Equipment Repair Foreman A class, effective April, 1992.
