CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the single class in the Vehicle Service Attendant series. Positions in this class perform a variety of routine servicing work and preventive maintenance on vehicles.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty following detailed instructions. Duties typical for positions in this class include cleaning the interior and exterior of vehicles; waxing vehicles; supplying automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other equipment with gas, oil, and other fluids; changing and repairing tires; servicing batteries; cleaning spark plugs; and keeping records of supply usage including fuel usage. Positions also perform general cleaning duties around the service area and make visual inspections for damage or wear to the vehicles. Positions may also help Equipment Repair Technicians with minor repairs or pick up parts from suppliers. Some positions may also aid in snow removal.

Supervision Given: None.

Supervision Received: Positions in this class receive immediate supervision from an Equipment Repair Supervisor or other supervisory or managerial position.

Scope: Work influences the operating condition and safety of vehicles and equipment.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance results in enhancing efficient service and safe operation of vehicles and equipment.

Personal Contacts: Frequent routine contacts with various levels of personnel both inside and outside the agency to discuss the servicing of vehicles and equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Some knowledge of basic arithmetic, units of measure, and equipment maintenance.

Skills: Working skill in the use of hand tools.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read, write, and follow simple instructions; to operate gas pumps; to operate motor vehicles; and to perform heavy manual labor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license. May require a commercial driver's license.

Education or Training: Completion of elementary school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: None required for this class.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was developed as a part of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program, and replaces the Highway Equipment Serviceman class, effective April 1992.
