CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the single class in the Transportation Sign Fabrication series for positions which fabricate a variety of highway signs for transportation districts in sign fabrication facilities, including regional sign production.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Positions in this class performs work of moderate difficulty by determining appropriate sign design and layout by consulting state, federal and agency manuals and by interpreting sign plans prepared by a designer. Prepares and develops photo negatives for silk-screening; applies reflective sheeting, ink, and lettering to sign blanks through heat and pressure application, or silk screening methods and equipment; operates hand and power tools such as a band saw, corner radius, stud welder, letter press, and shearing machine to prepare aluminum sing blanks and finish signs; maintains records of labor and materials used and completes and codes work orders; prepares signs for shipping and operates a forklift to load and unload signs; maintains manual and/or automated records of inventory issued and received; and performs preventive maintenance on equipment and maintains shop area and storage facilities. May design and produce specialty highway signs by determining dimensions, spacing, and format, either manually or by using a computerized sign graphics software and printer; and assist in preparing cost estimates.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Transportation Maintenance Supervisor or Transportation Maintenance Superintendent who reviews work in process. May receive work assignment and technical guidance from a Transportation Crew Leader.

Scope: Fabricates a variety of highway signs using manual and automated methods in support of district and residency sign installation and maintenance operations. In regional shops, positions produce a higher volume and wider variety of signs for multiple districts.

Impact of Actions: Work methods and processes affect the quality and quantity of signs produced. Design or fabrication errors or omissions may result in delays in filling requisitions and/or additional expense. Inaccurate or poorly designed sign messages may delay or endanger the traveling public and impact the reputation of the agency.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with residency and district sign installation and maintenance personnel. Infrequent external contact with vendors for the purpose of purchasing materials.
