Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises and coordinates the operations at permanent weigh stations or mobile units.

Typically reports directly to a district engineer and submits reports directly to the Division of Traffic and Safety.

Supervises a crew of Weigh Party Technicians in the weighing of trucks. Responsible for preparing shift schedules, providing guidance and instructions on weighing policies and procedures, reviewing reports for accuracy and completeness, and training of personnel. Also, responsible for the proper maintenance of scales, facilities and equipment. Incumbents respond to inquiries from representatives of state or federal agencies or members of the general public concerning weighing operations. May be subpoenaed to testify in a court of law concerning specific weighing incidents. Is subject to hazardous conditions associated with law enforcement.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of laws of Virginia pertaining to size and weights of vehicles, the Hauling Permit Manual, and sections of the Traffic and Safety Division’s operations manual dealing with weighing of vehicles. Ability to discuss the size and weight laws and related policies and procedures. Ability to represent the State in a court of law relative to agency standards and procedures. Ability to lift and set up scales for mobile unit. Possession of a valid Virginia Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

Graduation from high school and related work experience involving some supervisory responsibility. Additional education may substitute for experience. Relevant training and experience may substitute for high school graduation.
