Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs work on a shift engaged in checking vehicles at a highway weighing station or mobile unit for conformance with the size and weight regulations prescribed by law.

Works with considerable independence, under the general supervision of a Weigh Party Chief.

Work may involve assignment to a permanent station or mobile unit. Obtains axle and gross weight of vehicle on weighing platform or portable scales. Reports violations to State Police Officer who checks weight and issues summons. Checks oversize and overweight permits for permit validation and conformance. Completes necessary agency form reports. May be subpoenaed to testify in court. May assume responsibility for weighing operations in absence of Weigh Party Chief.

 

Qualification Guide

Ability to understand, interpret and apply policy manuals. Ability to discuss and interpret the meaning of regulations, guidelines and/or laws. Ability to perform arithmetic calculations. Ability to lift and set up scales. Possession of a valid Virginia Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

Graduation from high school and some related work experience. Additional education may substitute for work experience. Relevant training and experience indicating possession of the preceding abilities may substitute for nigh school graduation.
