Distinguishing Features of the Work

Operates and maintains light duty highway equipment on State force construction and maintenance work. The work includes the assignment of a variety of tasks associated with maintenance and State force construction.

The duties involve the performance of routine, repetitive work which requires the operation of mechanized equipment. Successful performance of the work requires and understanding of maintenance and engineering applications for which equipment characteristic of this class is to be used. Incumbents of positions allocated to this class are not restricted entirely to the actual operation of equipment; they provide hand labor and work as lead men supervising laborers performing uncomplicated maintenance and construction work as a sub-crew apart from the main group. Work assignments, received orally, are performed in the presence of a supervisor or checked by him at a later date. Assignments may also involve instructing new employees in equipment operation and simple highway maintenance techniques or assisting mechanics in the repair of equipment.

The equipment operated is easier to maneuver and manipulate, requiring less skill to operate than is required of employees assigned to positions allocated to higher classes. Generally, the equipment is lighter in weight, used on simpler and lighter tasks, and involves a less complex mechanical operation.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

  1. Uses light duty highway equipment, performs manual labor and supervises a group of laborers in accomplishing simple tasks related to snow removal preventive and corrective maintenance, and construction of highways. Tasks include driving, moving, rolling, machining, signing, patching, minor carpentry, concrete finishing, and fence and pipe installation. Types of equipment to be used include light trucks, distributors and graders; mowers; asphalt kettles; and air compressors.
  2. Makes minor adjustments and repairs to equipment; aids in making major repairs; cleans and services equipment and makes out equipment rental records
  3. Occasionally aids in instructing others in the operation of equipment.

 

Qualification Standards

Possession of a valid state motor vehicle operator’s and Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) if required by Virginia law; the ability to pass a performance test on selected equipment specified in the class.

A working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of light-duty, power-driven highway equipment; a working knowledge of state laws and agency regulations governing the operation of equipment on the highways; ability to make routine reports on hours worked or materials used; successful completion of prescribed physical examination by a qualified physician.
