CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Tailor Supervisory series. Positions in this class are responsible for scheduling, prioritizing, monitoring and supervising the activities and the work of other tailor positions. This class is distinguished from the Tailor Senior class by performing full supervisory duties. It is distinguished from the Tailor Manager class by the latter class's overall responsibility for the operation of a retail store offering the sale of uniform and accessories and various tailoring and alteration services.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which involves planning and scheduling projects, acquiring materials and supplies, inspecting and evaluating the work of subordinate staff and taking necessary steps to maintain tailoring work schedules and standards. This class may perform regular, complex or intricate tailoring tasks.

Supervision Given: Supervises positions assigned to lower level tailoring classes.

Supervision Received: Receives direction from higher level manager with regard to overall goals and objectives as they relate to a retail outlet operation.

Scope: Work affects the successful on-time completion of tailoring projects, the quality of the final product and the development of subordinate staff.

Impact of Action: Moderate impact as effective decisions and actions ensure the quality, timeliness and cost effectiveness of tailoring and related services provided to customers.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external contact with customers of retail outlet regarding tailoring services. Occasional external contact with outside vendors/ suppliers concerning routine inventory matters.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and standards of tailoring as well as working knowledge of retail shop operations.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of a variety of sewing machinery and related equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to fabricate items from patterns or to adapt pattern to meet needs, to take measurements, to sew a variety of complex items working with a variety of materials and to supervise employees.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional tailoring course work.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in the tailoring trade.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was revised as a part of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program. It replaces the Tailor Shop Assistant Manager class, effective May 1, 1992.
