CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second and managerial level in the Tailor Supervisory series. Positions in this class are responsible for the total management of a retail shop selling uniforms, a variety of other clothing and accessories, and for providing a full range of tailoring services. This class is distinguished from the Tailor Supervisor class by its responsibility for the overall management duties of a retail store operation.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty which involves planning and supervising the work of a staff; selecting and implementing management policies and procedures and marketing goals for a retail uniform shop on the campus of a university or college. This class develops fiscal and budgetary plans and controls; establishes prices for merchandise and services; negotiates and procures all merchandise, determines and maintains inventory levels; prepares necessary operating and financial reports; and monitors store operations so that customers needs are met and appropriate staff level maintained.

Supervision Given: Supervises and provides guidance to a supervisor of various levels of tailor classes and possibly to office service personnel.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from other agency director or manager.

Scope: Positions in this class affect the coordination and operation of a retail shop providing the sale and distribution of a variety of student uniforms, other clothing items and a full range of tailoring services.

Impact of Actions: Decisions have significant impact on the coordination and implementation of sales and services provided by the retail store and the performance of the staff providing required services. Errors could negatively impact goodwill and incur major costs in time and money.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external contact with vendors, suppliers, peer institutions, military organizations and customers. Frequent internal contacts with administrative and management staffs.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the principles and practices of business administration and of sales and promotion techniques, and of the policy and procedures of the organization. Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and standards of tailoring. Working knowledge of supervisory techniques.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of tailoring techniques, sewing machinery, and related equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to establish and implement marketing programs; and to supervise staff.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in the tailoring profession. Some experience in marketing, bookkeeping and supervision.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
