CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class in the series of classes for positions performing groundskeeping functions. Positions in this class perform, plan and direct the day-to-day work of one or more groundskeeping crews which may consist of Grounds Workers, Grounds Worker Seniors, or inmates. Positions in this class may by the charge position administering a small groundskeeping program. This class is distinguished from the Grounds Worker Senior class by the responsibility for planning and directing groundskeeping duties. This class is distinguished from the Grounds Supervisor class which has supervisory responsibility for performance evaluation, hiring/firing, and disciplining employees.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK:

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty which includes formulating and executing short-term work plans for the grounds program. The work typically includes the oversight of groundskeeping crews in the following tasks: equipment maintenance, grounds care and maintenance, landscape installation, and snow and ice removal. May also oversee mail delivery, ditch digging, setting up and moving furniture and equipment, custodial services, and vehicle maintenance. Typically requisitions supplies and materials and performs administrative recordkeeping duties.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however positions schedule, plan, and assign work; and monitor progress and ensure completion of assigned projects.

Supervision Received: Receives directions from a Grounds Supervisor or other higher level trades position.

Scope: Performs work which may affect the overall agency grounds program.

Impact of Actions: Work has a moderate impact on maintenance and care of the agency grounds program.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contact with suppliers and contractors regarding equipment and supplies; with the public to provide assistance and information; and with agency staff regarding work orders.

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques, practices and equipment; of related safety practices; and of the principles of planning day-to-day work activities and directing the work of others.

Skills: Working skill in operation and use of grounds maintenance equipment. Working skill in operating vehicles and tractors with various attachments may also be required.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to design and implement work plans; to lead the work of others; to read, write, and communicate instruction; and to lift heavy objects as required.

 

QUALIFICATION GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license may be required.

Education or Training: None required for entrance into this class.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in groundskeeping techniques and functions which include scheduling and assigning work, and maintaining records.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established in April 1989 as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update program. It replaces the Grounds Foreman class.
