CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the series of classes for positions performing groundskeeping functions. Positions in this class engage in groundskeeping activities and serve in a lead capacity for entry level Grounds Workers engaged in routine grounds maintenance. This class is distinguished from the Grounds Worker class by the responsibility for assigning the work and ensuring its completion. This class is distinguished from the Grounds Lead Worker class by the latter's responsibility for planning and directing grounds keeping activities and leading one or more groundskeeping crews.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which involves engaging in and leading Grounds Workers in groundskeeping activities. The work typically involves providing on-site work assignments and ensuring the work is accomplished; seeding, sodding, pruning, grading, planting, and mowing grounds; applying insecticides and pesticides as directed; moving and hauling furniture; removing snow, leaves, and trash; keeping the grounds of athletic fields and formal gardens; performing minor repairs on equipment; and maintaining signs and paved surfaces such as parking lots and sidewalks. May operate manual and power tools such as riding mowers, snow removal equipment, graders, tractors, and other grounds-related equipment.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions function in a lead capacity for Grounds Workers by assigning the work and ensuring its completion.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Grounds Supervisor or other higher level trades position.

Scope: Performs work which affects the grounds program at the specific agency or institution where services are provided.

Impact of Actions: Work has minor impact on the maintenance and care of the agency/institution grounds.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contact with suppliers concerning equipment and supplies; with the public to provide assistance and information; and with agency staff concerning work orders.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques, practices, and equipment; and of safety practices as related to the work.

Skills: Working skill in the operation and use of various manual and power tools and equipment routinely used in grounds maintenance. Working skill in operating motor vehicles and tractors with various attachments may also be required.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to give and receive instructions; to guide the work of others; and to lift heavy objects.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license may be required.

Education or Training: None require for entrance into this class.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience involving groundskeeping activities.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established in April 1989 as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update program. It replaces the Grounds Leadman class.
