5/1/89 H

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the series of classes for positions performing groundskeeping functions. Positions in this class perform routine work in all phases of grounds maintenance, and may operate a variety of equipment. This class is distinguished from the Grounds Worker Senior class by its requirement to be immediately supervised and given detailed instructions.

DISTINGUISHED FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty with limited need for discretion and judgment. Work involves the use of a variety of manual tools, and may require operation of power tools and equipment such as riding mowers, snow removal equipment, graders, tractors, and other grounds related equipment. The work typically includes mowing, cutting, planting, trimming, edging, pruning, and fertilizing trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns; removing leaves, snow, ice, and litter from grounds and collection points; setting up and moving equipment and furniture; and maintaining and sweeping paved surfaces such as parking lots and sidewalks. Performs preventative and minor maintenance on equipment such as lubrication, maintaining fluid levels, minor repairs, blade sharpening, and cleaning. May perform limited custodial duties and other types of manual labor. May be required to operate pick-up truck and tractor, and on a less frequent basis operate a dump truck or trash in support of the grounds maintenance function.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions may assist in the training of new workers.

Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from a Grounds Supervisor or other higher level trades positions. Supervisor routinely checks work for proper completion and provides close supervision when new work processes or procedures are introduced.

Scope: Employees in this class are responsible for specific assigned activities with assistance readily available.

Impact of Work: Work errors have minor impact beyond the immediate work area. The impact is lessened by the immediate supervision available to correct errors.

Personal Contacts: Infrequent internal and external contact with visitors to give directions; and with agency personnel to obtain equipment or supplies.
